Experts at the Russian Zhukovsky Institute of Aviation Technologies are designing a heavy flying ship (ekranoplan) as a transport aircraft that flies at low altitudes over water, ice, or land.

The experts manufactured a miniature model of the flying ship in order to test it inside a special aerodynamic tube for subsonic speeds.

This flying ship is designed to transport a payload of up to 500 tons, either inside the aircraft and its wings or in special containers carried by the aircraft.
It can take off and land at conventional airports. The aircraft flies at altitudes between 3 and 12 meters above water, ice, or land. These surfaces reflect air currents, causing the flying ship to fly at a low altitude, resulting in improved aerodynamics, reduced fuel consumption, and increased flight range.

The flying ship is expected to use liquefied natural gas fuel, which will reduce harmful emissions compared to aviation kerosene and ensure the flying ship’s superiority over other transportation systems.
